Tips
The action centres on a maze of seven levels. Each level can be reached by moving up a staircase on the right of the maze.
    The object of your quest is to find the rings of power but to do that you must kill as many of the Things as you can. To do so you have a bow and arrow, lightning bolts which may rebound on you, and magical firebolts. The monsters are also equipped with those weapons and if you are hit by one of them your strength is sapped.
    To regain your magical strength you must drink as much as you can of the milk which is lying around the maze. That part of the game is not stressed in the documentation with the package, as the authors believe that players should find their own ways to survive.
    One of the most important tips which I picked up during play was that you should have your finger on the fireball key when you enter a section of the maze from the stairway. When you get into the maze you will not be able to see all the monsters which are approaching you. A fireball will be produced if the monster is in your vicinity, so when you see that flame flare you should beware of the Things.
    The fireball is the easiest weapon to use, so at some point in the game you will be tempted to use it all the time. Unfortunately that weapon is also the most costly in terms of magical strength. If you have time you should try to use your bow and arrow.
    The bow is the most difficult of the weapons to use as the Things will often surprise you and launch a quick attack even before you have your bow stringed. To fire an arrow you must indicate in which direction you want it to fly and then press the arrow release key. Several shafts can be fired at one time if the need arises.
    The mazes which are created in Halls of the Things are set randomly but the game is easier to play in some parts of the maze than in others. The upper levels are the easiest to play in because there are fewer narrow corridors and more open spaces in which to see monsters coming. The expert, however, will find many things to tax the brain in the lower part of the maze.

HINTS AND TIPS
When entering you will be amazed,
Just fire a quick blast to start a blaze;
With lower levels you have more chance,
Above those monsters will lead you a dance;
All that glitters is not gold,
The wall's one place to metamorphose. (Quentin Heath in Sinclair User issue 18 , Page 129) 33

If you press 2 and SPACE, the door to the bottom level will open. Upon entering this level, you must be very, very quick as all the walls and connecting doors have been destroyed and the playing area is a massive hall. To finish the game you can give up the golden ring and then return to the doorway. (Ronald Smith in Crash issue 05 , Page 52) 4109
Cheat modes
I HAVE written about a bug in the supposedly bugless Spectrum game Halls of the Things, where it states that you have to get seven rings before you can get into the last section. I have found a way of getting into the last section at any point in the game.
    What you do is press '2', then 'space', which opens the last section automatically. When you have entered the section a little hint is to stop and press fireball as many times as you can and then walk to the other side of the 'maze', where you will find a key. When you get the key you can finish the game by going back to the stairway which finishes the game automatically. (Ian Sloan in Sinclair User issue 24 , Page 28) 4017

To get to the dungeon level on Halls without collecting any of the rings, you stand
outside the dungeon door and press the 2 key at the same time as the BREAK key. The
door opens and you can go to the dungeon level and collect the key to be victorious.

Now, prepare to enter the Hall of Things (sounds a bit like a trip to Castle Rathbone! Ed). The game has one of those mean looking loaders so Bruce Phipps has come up with the following few lines:

[code not printed in the magazine]

    Run this and play the tape from the start. The picture will load as usual and don't worry that the border's not how you remember it. When it's done, do POKE 32717,0 for no wounds, which is really limitless lives, or you can POKE 35923 with the starting amount of magic. Now use RAND USR 24576 to start the game.
