| Docking is a pain In the load
bearing regions of the lower body.
The most vital
acquisition is therefore a Docking
computer, followed by an ECM system
and front beam lasers, then fuel scoops
and cargo bay extensions. As soon as
you can afford it get a military laser;
they really do the business. If you want
to make money and improve your
rating, trade In narcotics between rich
industrial and poor agricuitural planets.
With an extended cargo bay you can
make 4000 credits a run! Pressing F
whilst in pause mode and then using
hyperspace launches you into
witchspace where you'll be attacked by
Thargoid ships. Destroy them
and scoop up the static
Thargoids and you can sell them as
alien items. There are five missions in
the game (as opposed to two on the
original Beeb version). The first mission
is given to you after 12 'Right On,
Commander!' messages. The object of
the mission is to rescue refugees from
a planet whose sun is going nova, and
take them to a safer place in the galaxy.
You get 100 gemstones if you're
successful.

When faced with the flashing ships that come in packs, don't worry too much about trading. Just keep enough cash to afford smart bombs and escape pods. After a while you'll encounter a stray flashing ship that'll drop a cloaking device when you zap it, (key Y to use) and then, Eureka! The game's even better to play. When you're asked to repel a Thargoid invasion, don't employ missiles, just use the arming button as a distance to target marker. (Mark Littlewood in Your Sinclair issue 06 , Page 34) 21 This can be found in this issue of Tips Amazing in the Cheats/Tips/Solutions section. (Cover Tape in Sinclair User issue 116) 731 This can be found in this issue of Tips Amazing in the Cheats/Tips/Solutions section. (Cover Tape in Sinclair User issue 117) 759 Don't buy a military laser for 6000cr, when the mining laser is twice as powerful and only costs 800cr. "Here are some statistics for the amount of hits you must score on each enemy to destroy it. Notice the mining laser scores: Pulse Beam Military Mining(Robert "Herbie" Hancock in Your Sinclair issue 07 , Page 26) 3950 When you have Elite Status do not sell your cargo. Equip your ship with military lasers and the like and try to buy some more cargo. You will then receive a plea for help. Accept the plea and hyperspace to any planet. You will now see that instead of 'fugitive' you are 'clean'. When you have landed on the planet, sell the cargo and you will receive a thank you note and 100g of gems. Good, eh? (Gary Williams in Sinclair User issue 47 , Page 26) 4191 RESCUING people from a supernova explosion can be very profitable, but you'll find yourself escaping from the entire galaxy to get away from the effects of the radiation. Novice traders should find a safe route and stick to it until they can buy equipment. Commander Jacinth - currently a dangerous fugitive running narcotics in the fifth galaxy says it's best to buy a good laser as soon as possible, followed by fuel scoops and an energy drive. Jacinth habitually uses his escape pod to wipe out his criminal record, which disappears when the ship is destroyed, and when he's not engaged in drug smuggling, recommends dealing in liquor, furs and computers as the most profitable trade goods. (Unknown in Sinclair User issue 47 , Page 26) 4192 To get from one space station to another, leave the space station, slow down and flip over so that you return to the same station to dock. Just before you enter, press H for hyperspace and when you have docked you will find your ship in a different space station. (C Richardson in Sinclair User issue 47 , Page 26) 4193 When you have reached the rank of Deadly, head for galaxy two. Stay there until you get a mission to destroy a space station that the Thargoids have taken over. If you accept the mission you will be given an ECM Jamming system. For a while I didn't know how to work it, then I pressed the Y key by accident and the screen went blue - my energy started to decrease and, more importantly, the ships which were attacking me suddenly stopped firing. I worked out that I could also fire missiles without them being destroyed by ECM's. I completed the mission and headed into Thargoid space. That is achieved by freezing the game and pressng the F key, then restarting the game and jumping to another planet. To get out of Thargoid space just reverse the procedure. I found that the Thargoids, too, could not fire back. So I happily zapped away until I had achieved 14 or 15 Right on commanders and became Elite. (Duncan A Wills in Sinclair User issue 48 , Page 22) 4218 When asked to repel a Thargoid invasion, don't use missiles, just use the arming button as a distance to target marker. (Mark Elite Littlewood in Sinclair User issue 48 , Page 22) 4219 IF YOU'RE having trouble docking in Elite, line yourself up from a distance, square on with the hatch of the space station. Go in at full speed without altering the alignment of your ship. With this method, you should dock successfully almost every time. I am Deadly with 300,000 plus credits. Aliens which appear to the left and right sides of your scanner, and also behind you, are usually pirates. It is advisable to let them shoot first though. (Commander Cannon Cole in Sinclair User issue 48 , Page 22) 4220 There is one ship out of all the attackers which can be seen only when you are close to it. It is an ASP. Hit it, and it will unleash four missiles if badly damaged. Destroy it, and there will be a cargo canister remaining. Yup, you've guessed it - a Cloaking Device - Y to activate and deactivate. Have fun. (Gavin Sneddon in Sinclair User issue 48 , Page 22) 4221 We have found a ship which is shaped like a space station but doesn't have a hatch. This ship is impregnable to any fire even an energy bomb. The missiles explode on impact but don't destroy it. After shooting at it for sometime it unleashes rapid laser fire which destroys you in two seconds. (James Skudder in Sinclair User issue 49 , Page 30) 4243 In one mission to destroy a Thargoid space station I was helped by the fitting of an ECM system jammer. When I accomplished the mission I was given something called an 'Iritab-II' but I don't know what it is. (K Heaton in Sinclair User issue 49 , Page 30) 4244 When tangling with Thargoids they will nearly always come at you vertically and bank at 90 degrees. When they pull up you can shoot them in the belly. I found that this was the most effective way of killing them. If you would like to make money quickly go to Retort and buy as many tons of liquor or wines as possible. Then go to Quixor, sell your cargo, and buy computers. Keep doing this run until you can afford a large cargo bay, then keep on running back and forth. (Daniel Baker in Sinclair User issue 50 , Page 20) 4259 FOR THE benefit of Daniel Baker and Nik Rice, in Zapchat (May) here's some help with their problems with Elite. Starting with Nik's problem, if it is one. Hyperspacing into Thargoid space involves several key-presses in the right order which is what you have obviously (unwittingly) done. When you leave a space station you are facing the planet. Just before pressing H to hyperspace press Caps Shift to freeze the game and follow that up with F (press only once). Unfreeze the game (Space) and H hyperspace to the planet of your choice. Half-way through you will stop and be attacked by anything up to half a dozen Thargoids. If you H again, without cancelling the procedure (the exact reverse) then you'll arrive again in Thargoid Space and be attacked by even more Thargoids. You cannot get in 'Witch Space' without doing the above sequence of key presses, although you may meet the odd Thargoid on your travels. Daniel Baker's problem is that he hasn't read the Space Trader's Flight Training Manual. On Page 7 in black and white are the full instructions for saving the position without having to to go the beginning each time you pull the plug. In Witch Space the easiest way of killing the thargoid ships is to become invisible, using the cloaking device. You can get this after being attacked and 'despatching' a minimum of 4 Asps. Don't worry if you can't get it first time around as they keep on coming for you each trip you make, until you get it. A useful tip is to keep the Energy Bomb until you are down to your last half bar of energy. In most cases the 4 Asps will return again if you are a long way from a Planet, so you'll need your rockets for them. Another money-saving and useful tip that'll give you combat experience is to line up your sight at half speed. when lock-on occurs do not fire your rockets but instead use laser power. In most cases you can kill before it passes over you (to shoot at your rear). This works for ones, twos, or even threes (and if you're brill four or fives). If it does get behind you stop, and do not follow, or else you'll be drawn further away from the planet than you already are. (Andy Wright in Sinclair User issue 52 , Page 20) 4517 It is generally accepted that the large cargo bay is the first major piece of equipment to buy followed by an ECM and a decent laser system. Once you are equipped suitably then the fun starts. When your rating has risen to Competent or over then Galactic Hyperspace to another galaxy. After flying around for a while you will get a mayday message from a space station. Here it asks you if you will save some refugees because the sun is going nova. Accept the mission and launch, then hyperspace immediately. Take the refugees to another planet and use the sell option to end the mission where up you are given a gift for your services. Sometimes when you are fighting pirates you will notice that an Asp keeps blinking on and off. Shoot this Asp and pick up its cargo. You will find you have now got a cloaking device which is activated by pressing V. The only disadvantage is that it tends to eat up your energy. While on the subject of Elite, Graeme (our beloved ED) has asked me to pass judgement on ACS's Elite Editor. Once you have loaded the program in it allows you to build a Cobra Mk4. On this ship you can define what equipment you have (including the Cloaking Device). It also allows you to define your rating, the number of credits you possess and the size of your cargo bay (max 250 tonnes). This process is very simple and resembles the equip option on the actual Elite game. Once you are satisfied with the ship you have built up then you can save the data out as a normal Elite file. Now load in your Elite original and load in the saved data, you now have a much more powerful ship. The only drawback with the editor is that it doesn't allow you to define where you want your ship to be, you always start at Lave. On the whole the program provides a useful service to players who aren't very good at the game and at £1.99 it is reasonable value for money. If you're interested then send a cheque or postal order for £1.99 to: ACS. Software (Address snipped in case it's some poor unsuspecting soul's house. Gerard) (Too Many To Mention So Said Robin Candy in Crash issue 25 , Page 58) 5977 SUPERNOVA Sometimes when you emerge from hyperspace the viewscreen changes to red and you get the message 'FUEL LEAK'. Afew seconds later the message MAYDAY CORIOLIS IN DANGER' is received. This message re-occurs at regular intervals. Get to the docking station smartish and you will receive a message (press the Buy Cargo key to get it). Answer 'Yes' to the question and you will find that your cargo bay holds some refugees. After launching, hyperspace straight away otherwise your ship will be destroyed by the Supernova. Dock near another planet and use the Sell option to end the mission and receive your award. CLOAKING DEVICE In any universe but universe 1 you sometimes get attacked by a fleet of Asps where one of them flickers on and off. Destroy this one and pick up the debris left behind. You will now have a Cloaking Device. This is activated by pressing Y but don't leave it on for too long because it drinks your energy. Particularly useful in Witch Space. INVASION When your rating is high enough you will get a message informing you that a particular planet has been invaded. You will then be given an ECM jammer to use on the space station that you must destroy. Fly to the space station of the named planet destroying Thargoids as you go. When you approach the station activate the ECM jammer and launch a missile at the space station. Then hyperspace to a new system and dock with the space station to get your award. WITCH SPACE In the booklet Witch Space is mentioned briefly. Contained in Witch Space are lots of lovely Thargoids just waiting to be killed. To get into Witch Space freeze the game then press F then unfreeze. To get out of Witch Space freeze the game press F again and unfreeze then Hyperspace. | I HAVE discovered an amazing bug in Firebird's Elite. Once through Lenslok, press 'Y' in answer to "Load new commander Y/N". Then take option 2, Save your position to tape and exit the menu with option 3.
You will be berthed around the planet Tigean with the status of Elite; 653425253.5 credits to your name; and enough hardware to decimate half the universe this side of Clapham. (Paul Hughes in Sinclair User issue 46 , Page 16) 4174 I have reached the stage of being Dangerous and I have 120,000CR. I am now faced with hoards of invisible ships which only become visible when they fire. It is impossible to play against these odds. Even if I use an energy bomb, when I next jump, there they are again. Is there a bug in my program, or is it some sadistic programmer who wants to make the best computer game to date practically unplayable? (J Smith in Sinclair User issue 47 , Page 26) 4194 I HAVE found a bug in Firebird's Elite. First get to Elite status and go into galactic hyperspace to galaxy five. You will find yourself around the planet Eduela but there will be nowhere else to hyperspace to. | To reach "elite", load the
game and when the title page with 'New
Commander Y/N' comes up, type
'Y'. Then when the menu 1. 'New
Commander's Name.' 2. 'Save
Commander', or 3. 'Exit' pops up,
select '2', enter your name and the
'press play on tape' prompt should
flash up. Don't press play on tape,
instead press the space bar, and
the security code for Elite rating
will be shown. then all that remains
is to press '3' and start playing at
Elite standard.

(Reproduced in Crash issue 91 - uncredited) When the game has loaded press Y to Load a new commander and then choose the Save option. Then continue the game. Just try it out to see the effect. Also: When you are in the docking station choose where you wish to Hyperspace and then launch. Now turn around and face the space station and start docking manually. Just before you enter the station press H to Hyperspace. When you have docked you will be in the docking station of the planet where you wished to go to without any hassle from pirates. (Robin Candy in Crash issue 26 , Page 109) 5995 In the 128K version - When you die, say "yes" to the exit when it has finished.
